When I think about vacationing in Mexico, a few things come to mind – 1) the place I met my gangsta soulmate 2) palm trees, white sand beaches, crystal blue waters and gorgeous sunsets 3) electronic music 4) tequila, lots and lots of ice cold tequila 5) a bad ass place to lose your mind, get crazy AF and of course – killer hangovers!

Needless to say, I’ve spent countless mornings waking up in Cabo with hangovers that would make me want to hide and think hard about the choices I made the night before…  ‘did I really dance on a table with a stripper pole…’.  But when you’ve paid for the sun and sand, the last thing you want to do is waste a day waiting for the room to stop spinning.

If you plan on partying hard, then you need a hangover contingency plan! That might not sound like much fun, but trust me it is possible to party your ass off, without suffering the consequences – too much! Your brain and your body will thank you. Want to kill your hangover and not look like a bloated bitch in your bikini? Use these detox tips to smash your vacation hangovers – pronto!

Hangover Tip #1: Juice it Away

Yep drinking fresh juices is a great way to get a whole lot of good-for-you phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and nitrates into your bloodstream to help ease your pain – quickly. And I’m not talking about that boxed crap – drink freshly squeezed, picked ripe from the tree juice.

Juicing can help restore vitamins and mineral levels of nutrients that can actually help reduce hangover feelings. Secondly fresh juice from nitrate rich foods like beets can help increase nitrate in the blood, this helps increase oxygen and vasodilation of blood vessels allowing for more nutrient and oxygen delivery throughout the body including your hurting brain. If you’re suffering with a headache this dilation can help draw oxygen and improve blood flow to the brain that can help reduce your hangover headache.

Juicing has also been shown to help increase antioxidant status in the body, which means you can recover faster. Juice with green vegetables such as spinach, kale, or even kiwis, along with vegetables and fruit that have higher water content such as coconut, cucumber, beets, watermelon, oranges, pineapples and grapefruits. Also consider avocado – full of creamy goodness but also full of glutathione – a strong antioxidant that helps speed recovery!

Not sure you want to juice all day? Start your day with juice. Head to the fresh juice counter found on many brunch buffets in Mexican hotels. Sip on green juice made with kiwi, pineapple, avocado and spinach, or try my fave – beet and orange!

Hangover Tip #2: Fill Up on Water Bitch!

Probably not an eye opening revelation but water really is essential when it comes to killing a hangover. Water helps re-hydrate, allowing the metabolism to function optimally, while at the same time help flush out nasty toxins. And just in case you didn’t know – alcohol is a toxin! Drinking water can re-energize, while also help to reduce hunger between meals, which can help with those nasty post drinking food binges!

Have a hard time drinking water? Try making simple water infusions using slices of cucumber, chopped mint, lemon, orange, grapefruit and strawberries. Best part – water infusions don’t add extra calories, but instead add a hint of flavour that can make it easier to drink water. Feeling like a lazy bitch, and don’t want to make it yourself – no worries if you’re staying at a nice enough hotel you’ll find a cooler filled jug of infused water somewhere in the lobby or near the bar!  In addition to water infusion, consider drinking coconut water, which is a source of natural electrolytes and minerals that can help re-hydrate you faster.

Drink at least three to four litres of water while vacationing. And consider drinking more if you’re sitting under the sun, sweating or being active while in the heat, but especially when drinking alcohol. For every tequila shot or ounce of alcohol you consume, be sure to also have one ice-cold glass of water!

Hangover Tip #3: Avoid Fatty Greasy Food

Sure you might think downing a handful of cheesy fries and a few tacos might do the trick to cure your hangover but it won’t! Yes, fast food is loaded with salt, which no doubt you’re probably lacking from not only drinking but also from sweating under the hot Mexican sun, but it’s actually a better option to reach for something healthier!

For one, the reason your body is craving fast food is because your blood sugar levels can dip along with your mood from a drinking binge. When you drink the body switches to metabolize alcohol, instead of the food that’s in your system. Eating healthy food that is higher in fibre can help to stabilize your blood sugar levels, if eaten prior to your tequila, mojito and margarita pool party.

Eat a breakfast high in fibre – whole grains are a great source of detoxifying b-vitamins that can help reduce hangover symptoms. Reach for a couple of slices of whole grain toast with peanut butter, or a bowl of oatmeal with fruit or low sugar muesli instead of something sweet and sugary like pastries or processed cereals.

Hangover Tip #4: Fill Up on Veggies and Fruit

Eating more veggies and fruit can help increase natural sources of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that can help cleanse the body and your gut to remove toxins. If you have been skipping the healthy food in favour of theme night at the resort – ohhh look it’s Italian night, now’s the time to start filling your plate with the good stuff and skip over the yummy carbs! Instead head straight to the salad bar.

Load up on leaves – kale, spinach, and rocket, along with cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower. As for the fruit – choose high fibre low glycemic options like berries and apples, but also high water content fruit like watermelon and citrus fruit.  Green veggies contain fibre and antioxidants that can help scrub the gut and remove toxic metabolites from the body, while berries provide a high antioxidant rating that can protect the body from damage caused by poisonous toxins like alcohol.  When the gut is clean, inflammation and bloating reduces, and your metabolism and even better fat burning increases! Make an effort to eat a ton of fresh fruit and veggies with as many meals as possible.
