Can Food Improve Skin?

Oh yes it can!  Your skin is a direct result of the diet you feed it.  If you want glowing skin, then plenty of fresh superfoods, healthy fats and high-quality collagen need to be high on your grocery list.  A good diet, with the right foods will provide an abundance of building blocks for radiant, glowing skin, plus natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that can help protect the skin against everyday aging, stressors and environmental damage caused by pollution and even UV rays.

Glowing Skin

Circulation & Beets

If you want glowing skin, these two ingredients are diet essential.  Beets are loaded in nitrates and vitamin C.  Nitrates increase vasodilation of blood vessels, which in turn increases blood flow and oxygenation of the tissues.  This is helpful for reducing inflammation, removing stagnating liquids and improving circulation in tissues preventing the formation of cellulite.

Beets also pack a high vitamin C content, this vitamin is an important component of the skin, it’s found in both the outer layer of the skin – the epidermis and the layer underneath – called the dermis!  Vitamin C is also involved in collagen production and has anti-inflammatory properties too.

Antioxidant Power of Berries

Berries including blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries have the highest concentration of antioxidants including anthocyanins, ellagic acid and resveratrol.  Ellagic acid can block enzymes that break down collagen in sun-damaged skin.

Berries anthocyanin concentration increases microcirculation in the capillaries and small blood vessels, thereby reducing swelling and improving skin appearance and texture.  Several studies conducted on women suffering from varicose veins show that blueberry extract can counteract swelling, reduce pain, and improve skin appearance.

Collagen Booster

Collagen protein is one of the most abundant proteins in the body.  It is important for providing structure to your skin – keeping it firm, tight and even hydrated.  It’s also one of the major building blocks of bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Collagen is the glue that holds us together, and as we age the body produces less collagen and collagen that is lower in quality.  The skin can become less firm and supple. Supplementing with collagen can help increase collagen production and maintain collagen structure.  Just a few grams per day can help increase hydration of skin as well as skin texture.

What’s in this Glowing Skin Smoothie:

This vibrant pink, beauty smoothie packs a ton of healthy ingredients to help with circulation, detoxification, collagen production, and anti-aging antioxidants to protect the skin from the elements.

Citrus Fruit – including blood orange and lime which provides vitamin C, a key ingredient involved in collagen production.

Berries – use either fresh or frozen, although raspberries and strawberries were used for this mix, you can also use blueberries or blackberries or buy a frozen mix berry blend.

Beet Root Powder – use beetroot that is already cooked and soft.  Beetroot provides natural nitrates that help increase blood flow in the body, helping increase dilation of blood vessels and improving circulation of nutrients and removal of toxins.

Collagen – collagen comes in various forms, but marine is best for skin.  Choose either unflavoured or flavoured.  Collagen protein is bitter, compared to your regular protein, but the berry sweetness will smooth that out nicely.

Dragon Fruit – this fruit provides fiber and bulk to the smoothie, plus it contains vitamin C, needed in the formation of healthy skin.

Coconut Yoghurt – provides a creamy texture, as well as probiotics to help with digestion.  You can also replace with a dairy yoghurt such as Greek yoghurt or another plant yoghurt such as soy.

Almond Cream – this yummy nutty plant-based cream will add a boost of vitamin E.  This vitamin is a naturally occurring component of healthy skin that helps defend and protect it against aging, and stress from the environment.

Lauren’s Tips:

  • Add a scoop of reds powder to up the fiber and antioxidant content.
  • Have some fresh mint?  Drop in a bunch, also good for digestion and adds a nice minty flavor that pairs great with citrus and beets!
  • Can’t find coconut yoghurt?  Use silken tofu instead to add an extra creaminess, plus low in calories!
  • Instead of almond cream, use any other plant based milk – almond, coconut, oat or cashew.
